Reaction to articles

The "Silencing Teachers in an Era Of Scripted Reading" article was disconcerting. As teachers, we hope that all our hard work and efforts will be supported by our administrators but when it's not and we are viewed as troublemakers for advocating change when something is clearly not working, we may have to ask ourselves, "Is this worth losing my job?" I think many teachers conform and pray that change will come eventually because they do not want to be punished or even worse, lose their jobs. I think two key issues/concerns in this article are: 1) Why is the Open Court curriculum not differentiated to meet the needs of each student in this particular poorer area and 2) Why can't the curriculum be supplemented there but in other schools in middle class areas it can be?

Wikipedia's entry on literacy seem to be on target from what I know it to be. It's not just about being able to read the words on the paper, it's about decoding, fluency, vocab, phonological awareness and most importantly, comprehension.

I didn't really see a connection between "The Greatest Art for the Littlest Readers" article and the other two. To me it was more of a plug for the exhibit. I'm wondering what this article has to do with reading.
